A child should be properly sedated for the procedure of Bronchoscopy. In case of insufficient sedation, there will be excessive cough, excessive pain, excessive laryngospasm and bronchospasm. For conscious sedation ,local anesthetic agent is used.
Lidocaine is either applied directly, sprayed or nebulized. 2-5% concentration is used to apply over the nose and larynx, 0.5-1% is used to be applied below the larynx, and 1-5 ml of 2-4% is used to nebulize the patient
The total dose of lidocaine should not exceed 5-7 mg / kg of body weight, but it becomes difficult to estimate the correct amount which has been used because some amount comes out in suction, some amount is swallowed and some is spit out
Lidocaine jelly is aslo applied over the insertion tube of bronchoscope so that it can pass through the airway smoothly
