High Frequency ventilation is required when the conventional ventilation fails to deliver
It happens when there is severe ARDS
Severe ARDS is defined when the ratio of PaO2 to FiO2-PaO2/FiO2 becomes less than 100
It is also diagnosed when oxygen index is high,30 or more, means very high demand of oxygen
In high frequency ventilation, small amount of tidal volume is delivered at very high rate at 900 or more breaths per minute
Settings are different from the settings of conventional ventilator
It is also the ventilator of choice in cases of pulmonary hypoplasia , pulmonary hypertension in neonates, and in conditions of air leak syndrome like Pneumothorax, pulmonary interstitial emphysema and Pneumomediastinum
